Over the last few years, our employees and company have provided kids with free memberships to the John Ball Zoo; supported youth sports teams; sponsored pet adoptions at the Humane Society of Kent County; participated in the Grand Rapids Griffin’s Charitable Goals Program; contributed to Silent Observer; annually supported the Santa Claus Girls; helped fund Habitat for Humanity projects, sponsored children’s activities at the Kent County Youth Fair: collected business attire for the Working Women’s Closet and participated in the Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure 5K events. Often the involvement has been initiated by a single individual and grown into company involvement. The concept is illustrated by our involvement with the Humane Society of Kent County. I was originally inspired by a friend’s story of adopting her dog, Buddy. Our initial donation of 2 free pet adoptions inspired our clients to adopt 8 additional pets. The next year our donation of 5 free adoptions was matched by business partners for a total of 10 free adoptions. Energized by this success, we have sponsored the Home for the Holidays Open House since 2003. We also partnered with Grand Rapids Griffins’ defenseman Bryan Helmer and the Charitable Goals program to contribute $2500 to the Humane Society of Kent County. The donations and personal involvement by our company and employess has lead to over 200 dogs and cats becoming “new best friend for life!” I didn’t list the previous examples to brag about our charitable activities but to demonstrate the power of planting a seed and helping it to grow. In West Michigan, we are fortunate to have companies like Amway, Meijers and Steelcase with compassionate leaders making contributions to our community. While we may not have the financial resources of these corporate giants, we have the compassionate leader ready to take the next step. Our corporation is in the process of establishing a Charitable Foundation to facilitate charitable activities. While previous activity has been mostly limited to West Michigan, we want to expand across the state and country. We need your help to identify worthy charitable organizations to form a partnership to raise funds. While we are still in the process of establishing charitable guidelines and the approval process, we are looking for tax-exempt organizations with ethical standards compatible with our own. While organizational purpose is critical, organization size is not. We will consider small local organizations or large national organizations.
