If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again
Written By: Harry Gribnitz

Many of our most important reminders are displayed on our refrigerator door. The pictures of our family and friends. The artwork created by a child. The post-it note to pick up milk and bread at the store. A friend recently shared the following article by Diane Loomans. If you have a child, hope to have a child, have a grandchild, or just know a child, please try to find room for this one. I even moved the Griffins’ and Cubs’ schedules to make room on my refrigerator.

If I had my child to raise all over again,

I’d finger-paint more and point the finger less.

I’d do less correcting and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing seriously, and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power, and more about the power of love.

From the book, Full Esteem Ahead, 100 Ways to build Self-esteem in Children & Adults by Diane Loomans.
