My Neighborhood Written By: Harry Gribnitz In late March, I spent a Saturday with some of my friends and neighbors helping Helen. Helen is an elderly lady that lives across the street from me. Several times a year we gather to help with some of the fix-up work around her house that she can no longer handle herself. We spent the morning with some raking, a little scraping and painting, cleaning the gutters and fixing the broken latch on the gate. She still loves to spend time in her flower garden, but just can’t handle the more physical work. Around noon, we gathered around her kitchen table to talk and enjoy Helen’s homemade soup. The subject turned to our idealistic youth, when we were all going to change the world. Many of us were in high school or college during the 60’s. We all had heard “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” At some point in our life, we had each tried, but had discovered it was not our role. By the time we were washing down the warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookies with cold milk; we had reached two conclusions. We could all do something to make our own little neighborhood a better place and homemade soup and cookies were wonderful. We each renewed a commitment to actively look for opportunities to make our neighborhood just a little bit better. Our “neighborhood” was not just the block where we lived. Our neighborhood includes the office where we work, the place where we worship, the school that teaches our children, the places we shop, and the circle of friends that makes our life special.
