Twenty four years ago today that famous phrase was asked of millions of Americans. “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” Even though my daughter, Janet, was only seven at the time, she remembers it also. We were watching the US Olympic team upset the Russians on their way to a gold medal in the 1980 Olympic Games. I think that event might have influence her view of sports and the value of hard work as no other event. As I watched the movie “Miracle”, it all came back to me.
For those of my generation, we remember vividly three events that changed our generation; the November day in Dallas that President Kennedy was shot; the day when man first walked on the moon and the day Team USA beat the Russians. How can a hockey game compare to those other history altering events? Iranian revolutionaries were holding 52 Americans at the US embassy in Tehran. The aftermath of Watergate, the Vietnam War, high interest rates (18%) and a scarcity of gasoline led President Jimmy Carter to say America was experiencing a “crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will.”
In the midst of this crisis, Herb Brooks led a group of 20 fresh-faced college kids to what was probably the greatest upset in modern sports history. If the teams had played a 100 times, the Russians would have won 99. The upset was equivalent to a group of high school football players defeating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
I have never recommended a movie in my monthly letter. The movie critics will probably point out the flaws that they see in the production. But if you would like to share the exhilaration of this historic event, please go see “Miracle”. Even if you or your spouse is not a hockey fan or even a sports fan, please go see “Miracle”. If you would like to instill a little of the value of good old fashion hard work in your children, please take them with you.
