EXTREME DOG MAKEOVER Written By: Harry Gribnitz It is not often you find someone that started their first business while in the fourth grade!! Auston started out by providing dog walking services for her neighbors for only $1.00. Her love of animals also drew her to the Humane Society of Kent County as a volunteer. Not only did she become a very active volunteer, but she also began to learn more about the care, grooming and training of the dogs. Austin continues using her seemingly endless supply of energy, enthusiasm and passion to volunteer at the Humane Society for everything from a dog walker to key participant in many special events. I first met Auston at the 2003 Home for the Holidays open house event. Last year Auston combined all of these attributes into starting her business, The Paw Place in Grandville. Like Dennis Franz “I don’t do commercials” but I am always willing to recommend a business and business owner that I trust. Each month Auston and her staff provide a free grooming for one of the adoptable animals from the Humane Society. Nothing like a bath, nail trim and haircut to get you ready to meet the new family that might want to adopt you. When a seeing-eye dog received poor grooming from someone else, Auston and crew turned him back into his handsome self. Turk can now proudly help his owner find his way around town. Molly, Auston’s own dog is a Humane Society therapy dog. Together they work with students at schools, camps and rehabilitative facilities throughout Kent County.
