HOT AND HUMID, COLD AND CREAMY
Written By: Harry Gribnitz

Nothing goes better on a hot, humid August day than ice cream. I’ll admit it. I love ice cream on a sweltering summer day. The passion is partially just the simple pleasure of a cold, creamy treat to beat the heat. But it also triggers found memories of summers of the past.

I remember when I was growing up in suburban Chicago; the summer silence would be cut by the ringing of the bell of the “Popsicle Boy” on his cart. For those of you to young to remember, they where three-wheeled carts with a freezer compartment in front and a teenager peddling in the back. They looked a little like a giant tricycle. We all ran with our money to buy our favorite treat. Many of my friends, favored Popsicles, but my favorite was a Drumstick. A drumstick is vanilla ice cream in a cone topped with chocolate and nuts and a chocolate surprise on the bottom. Many a T-shirt was stain with the dripping ice cream and crumbled chocolate from a delicious experience with one of these treats.

When Janet and Jim were old enough to appreciate the experience, the local ice cream shop became a regular summer stop. If you think it is hot and humid in Michigan, you should try Houston or Dallas! A “31 Flavors” was their favorite ice cream stop. (Although Dairy Queen was a close second.) Their technique for selecting the flavor for the day was totally opposite. Janet would carefully consider all the options, and then order Chocolate Chip in a sugar cone. On her very adventurous days, she would go for Mint Chocolate Chip in a sugar cone. Jim would look for the most unusual flavor or combination he could find; Licorice, watermelon, cranberry, prune (if they had it) or anything containing bubble gum or other strange, unidentifiable lumps. No flavor was too bizarre.

All this thinking about ice cream is making me hungry and gave me an idea. Would you allow me to send you a FREE ice cream treat? Just send me an e-mail or note (no phone calls please) with your favorite ice cream flavor, shop or story. I’ll send all of you who respond a gift certificate for an ice cream treat in next month’s letter. I might even have an extra treat for the best story.
