On a Saturday in late September, I drove to Chicago for the day. Normally a trip the Chicago includes a visit to one of my favorite sports stadiums, an evening at the theater, a visit to a museum or zoo or even a little nightlife. However this trip was different, it was a leg of Gizmo’s trip to his new home in Minnesota.
My friend’s Barb and Fred Bliss are professional breeders of Pekingese. As members of the Pekingese Club of America, they are actively involved in The Pekingese Rescue Program. The program finds new homes for Pekes that have been mistreated or just need new homes.
When Gizmo first came to them, he growled and snarled whenever anyone came within 20 feet. I never thought he would be able to be placed in a new home. After a few weeks of gentle words and loving care (Barb gives Fred most of the credit), he started to redevelop some trust. By mid-September, he seemed to be ready for a new home. Barb located a potential new home in Minnesota. She then arranged for the new owner to drive to Chicago. I was recruited to drive Barb and Gizmo to the Windy City.
When we met her on the near Northside, Gizmo greeted her with wagging tail and a “bounce” in his run that only a happy Peke can manage. The transformation was unbelievable. It was a tribute to two caring people who truly rescued Gizmo.
