A city boy, Kenny, moved to the country and bought a donkey from an old farmer for $100.00. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. The next day the farmer drove up with bad news, “Sorry son, but the donkey died.” Kenny replied, “Well then just give me my money back.” The farmer said, I can’t do that, I already spent it.” Kenny said, “OK then, unload the dead donkey. I am going to raffle him off.” The farmer replied you can’t raffle off a dead donkey!” Kenny replied with a grin, “I just won’t tell anyone he is dead.”
A few weeks later the farmer met up with Kenny and asked, “What happened with the dead donkey?” Gleefully Kenny responded, “I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at $2.00 each and made a profit of $898.00. Amazed the farmers asked, “Didn’t anyone complain?” Kenny replied, “Just the guy who won. So I gave him his $2.00 back. Kenny grew up to eventually become the chairman of Enron.
The farmer had another neighbor who every year entered his corn in the state fair and won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper reporter interviewed the corn farmer and learned something interesting about how he grew his corn. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. The reporter asked, “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors?’
“Why sir,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbor grow good corn.”
Those who choose to be at peace must help their neighbors be at peace. Those who choose to live well must help others live well. The value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. If we are to grow good corn, we must help our neighbors grow good corn.
